When planning a bathroom, kitchen, or even an outdoor remodel, one of the most common questions we get at F&M Construction & Remodeling is: “Are tiles waterproof?” The short answer is—some are, but proper installation is key to making the entire surface water-resistant or waterproof.
Are Tiles Themselves Waterproof?
The material your tiles are made of determines how well they repel water:
- Porcelain Tiles: These are among the most water-resistant tiles available, with a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%. Their dense structure makes them ideal for wet areas like showers, bathrooms, and outdoor use.
- Ceramic Tiles: Slightly more porous than porcelain, ceramic tiles are still considered water-resistant. They’re perfect for walls, backsplashes, and general flooring, especially when properly glazed.
- Natural Stone Tiles: Materials like marble, travertine, or slate look stunning but are naturally porous. Without sealing, they can absorb moisture, stain easily, and become damaged over time. Regular sealing is a must.
What About the Entire Tiled Surface?
Even if your tiles are waterproof, the full surface isn’t necessarily water-tight unless properly installed. That’s because:
- Grout lines between tiles are not waterproof. Grout can absorb water and become a pathway for leaks, especially in areas with frequent exposure to moisture.
- Without a waterproof membrane beneath, water can seep through grout lines, cracks, or tile edges and damage the subfloor or wall structure beneath.
How to Make a Tiled Area Truly Waterproof
To ensure a long-lasting, waterproof installation, we recommend:
- Using waterproof or low-absorption tile like porcelain in wet areas.
- Installing a waterproof membrane (like RedGard or Schluter Kerdi) under the tile surface in bathrooms, showers, and wet rooms.
- Sealing grout lines regularly to prevent moisture intrusion.
- Hiring experienced contractors who follow proper tile installation and waterproofing protocols.
